Fireworks: It’s that time again!
Time for fireworks, but it’s also time for to pay great attention to safety as well. Tens of thousands of people are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with fireworks every year. Roughly 55 percent of the injuries were burns, and most of the injuries involved the hands, eyes and head. Another alarming statistic is that about half of the victims were under the age of 15!
Some Safety Tips When Attending Public Fireworks Displays
1) Obey the police, fire and safety officials, and respect the safety barriers that have been put in place to allow the trained operator room to safely do his job. It’s crucial that you resist any temptation to get close to the actual firing site. The best view of the fireworks show is from about a quarter of a mile or more away.
2) Although it’s a rare happening, a firework component could fall to the ground unexploded. If you find one, don’t touch it – immediately contact the local fire or police department.
3) Leave your pets at home. Dogs have very sensitive ears and the loud booms & bangs can be very uncomfortable for your furry friend. In fact, these noises can actually injure their ears.
4) Don’t bring your own fireworks to public displays. Sparklers and other items for your own private use are not appropriate to use when a large crowd is present.
Safety Tips for Home Fireworks Displays
Leaving Illinois?
Fireworks are not legal in Illinois, however if the state you’re in allows personal fireworks, here are some additional safety tips:
1) Buy fireworks only from licensed outlets. Be careful to follow all the package directions. Store fireworks in a dry, cool place.
2) Remember, alcohol and fireworks do not mix!
3) Don’t allow young children to play with fireworks. No running with fireworks- don’t allow any “horseplay”.
4) Only light your fireworks outdoors in a clear space, away from houses, dry foliage and flammable materials. Keep a bucket of water nearby. Keep unused fireworks away from firing areas. Be sure people are out of range before lighting your fireworks.
5) Always remember to wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks. Light one firework at a time, and move away from it quickly. Don’t stand over fireworks when lighting. Never relight or handle a malfunctioning firework. Soak them in water and throw them away.
6) Never light fireworks in windy conditions, and don’t ignite them in any kind of container.
7) Never experiment with homemade or altered fireworks.
8) Dispose of used fireworks by soaking them in water before throwing them away.
